Hi. I'm interested in finding places where I can purchase sheet music for danzones, preferrably conjuntos or big band arrangements. Does anyone know where I can go? Thank you.

Hola, estoy interesada en conseguir musica impresa para danzones, preferiblemente arreglos para conjunto u orquesta. Alguien sabe donde conseguirlos? Muchas gracias.

Hi Nelie,
This is Bob Karty, pianist for La Moderna Tradición. We transcribe our arrangments from the original recordings and adapt them to our instrumentation as needed.
I did a search for 'danzon' at 3-2 music publishing (www.3-2.com), the only source I know for good arrangments of salsa/Latin jazz. I found three danzon charts, one for big band, another for combo, the third for 'little big band.' These are contemporary danzones by Arturo Sandoval, Oscar Hernandez, and Pauito D'Rivera.
Unfortunately, I don't know of other sources for danzon sheet music, but try web searches if you haven't already. If you're looking for Acerina-style band arrangements, you might have to transcribe them yourself, or hire someone to do it. Transcribing is time-consuming, but it's a great way to learn about the music.
Also, though I haven't been there, my understanding is that brass bands still play danzon in Veracruz; if you ever visit there, you could try asking band leaders if they'll sell you copies of their charts, or at least find out where they get them.
Good luck, and please let us know if you find sources for published danzon arrangements.

Hello danzon17, and nelebron.
If I could make a recommendation, I'd suggest putting your email addresses in your profiles, then you can use the 'email' button to send each other emails
If you leave your email addresses up here, some evil devices known as 'email harvestors' will grab your email addresses and you'll start getting even more spam than you probably are getting. Email harvestors crawl through the internet looking for email addresses on webpages, that's all they do, day in and day out, that's where spam senders get a lot of their email addresses from.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. You can use the 'edit' button to delete the visible email address, and if you go to the top of the page, you can edit your profile by clicking the 'profile' link.
Welcome to the forums, by the way, keep your eye out for the brand new Orquesta la moderna tradicion cd, called I believe En Canta, it's very good, the first prerelease version was excellent, but they're went back into the studio and made it even better.
Expected release date is maybe sometime next month. |
