Friends,

I am running some old 33's..12" and I have to buy a cartridge or a new needle..I have all other computer software and other needs in place, inc a cleaning method...

Question, Does a magnetic cartridge wear out? Mine is old...an Audio Technica, AT 12S Shibata stylus, which went bad...must have lost the tip...

Should I find a stylus for it...or buy something new instead???

My Regards, John

they most definitely do wear out. The stylus on higher end cartridges is basically something like a tiny diamond, but it gets dull over the years.

You can actually pull them off and look at them under a strong magnifying glass a weak microscope to verify its condition, most stereo stores used to do that but of course now turntables are not nearly as common.

Search the internet for replacements, they are simple to replace, usually they just pull out of the cartridge.

The styluses also tend to collect a dense layer of crud, which can fool you into thinking that it's dull when it's actually just covered with a glob of gunk. There used to be little brushes you could use to clean them off, but if you are extremely careful, you can gently dislodge the crud with a piece of cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol.

But most styluses if they are reasonably old are probably worn out.

At this point however, you're probably best off buying a whole new cartridge, unless you find a cheap place to buy replacement styluses online. Get something good though, cheap cartridges sound really bad, hissy etc.

Sure cartridges were like that, hissy. Stanton are really solid and reliable, and weren't too expensive.

Hi Friends,

If I may please post to my earlier query....

In fact, my friend, I have a Stanton DJ cartridge, from a friend of my sons...he doesn't like it...It's a 680EL, which is pretty new, I think he told my son it was in the box for a few years...he has another set of two he alternates now...and prefers.

It is not really a home unit, but it likely is much better than I need to worry about...do you think? it tracks heavier than my old one, and the freq. res. is less, but I suspect no one would ever know anyway, as the songs are going over to WAV,. and then many to mp3...???

Thanks! for the very kind answer!~!, and forgive me for not commenting on the Orquesta...I will when I become more familiar with the material...!! I DO like the sound very much...!! My Best, John
